Understanding the appropriate dosage of medications is paramount in ensuring safe and effective treatment. Accrufer, a vital medication for managing iron deficiencies, encompasses various dosing regimens tailored for different demographics.

For adults, the dosage of Accrufer often varies based on the specific condition and individual health factors. Pediatric dosages are carefully determined considering the child’s age and weight, ensuring the correct administration and safety. Accrufer is available in diverse forms and strengths, providing flexibility in dosing options.

Additionally, special medical categories, such as pregnant or breastfeeding individuals and those with specific medical conditions, require unique considerations for the dosage of Accrufer, emphasizing the need for precise and individualized dosing strategies.

The recommended dosage for Accrufer is 30 mg twice daily, to be taken either one hour before or two hours after a meal. It is advised not to open, break, or chew Accrufer capsules for administration.

The duration of treatment will vary depending on the severity of the iron deficiency; however, typically a minimum of 12 weeks of treatment is necessary. Treatment should be maintained for as long as required until ferritin levels normalize and fall within the normal range. This criterion guides the continuation of the treatment until the desired iron level in the body is achieved.

Accrufer Pediatric Dosing

Accrufer has been used in pediatric patients in clinical trials, but the safety and efficacy of Accrufer in pediatric patients have not been established. In the clinical trials, the pediatric patients who received Accrufer were generally well-tolerated. There is no currently approved pediatric dosing guidance for Accrufer (ferric maltol).

Accidental ingestion of iron-containing products such as Accrufer (ferric maltol) can pose severe risks, particularly to children under the age of 6. It’s crucial to store Accrufer (ferric maltol) in a location inaccessible to children to prevent accidental intake.

If a child has ingested Accrufer (ferric maltol) and displays symptoms like vomiting blood, experiencing diarrhea, or showing signs of stomach pain, it’s important to contact your local Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222. Immediate medical attention is necessary in such situations to ensure the child’s well-being and safety.
